Youth Programs

TV3 is proud to offer youth programs to introduce Medford's young to public access at an early age. Some of our recent programs are highlighted below:

The Columbus School News Program was a fall program, where a group of elementary school students met after school to learn about TV3 and produce a show. The news program showcased news and other features about the students and their school. The kids were introduced to the hotset and the studio. Staff worked with them to develop their ideas for stories, write the stories and then shoot them on video. News pieces ranged from sports to dance to family vacations to what they were learning in their classes. The kids served as the anchors of the show. They even produced a PSA about a Columbus School book sale fundraiser.

The Medford High School Film Program was a spring project, where TV3 in conjunction with Scene:Teens and Medford High School produced a film. The name of the film was Wise Boyz, and it focused on vandalism and gang violence. The teens met with staff and adult volunteers to discuss the topic, and then developed an outline of a story based on the topic. The staff and volunteers then workshopped scenes in the studio, and then went out on location to shoot them. There was no script. The 'improv' approach allowed the kids to explore the topic in a very real kind of way and express themselves creatively. The final 30 minute piece was so well-received, that a web series was made out of it for an international website, and $3,500 was awarded to TV3 Medford for the work.

The Columbus School Film Program was a spring project, partially funded by the Medford Arts Council. In this project, the staff and 4th and 5th graders from The Columbus School produced two short 3 minute films. After going through storytelling and production design exercises, the students each wrote a story and they voted on which one to produce. The resulting film called 'Fairies, Zombies and a Dog' was a fun and entertaining fantasy film. The kids also performed in a film called 'PC Noir', a politically correct film noir for kids, that was named a winner in an international competition and brought in $500 in fundraising to TV3.

The current project is an afterschool program open to middle school and high school students from all area schools. We are developing a short film on the topic of rumors. The program meets on Mondays, from 3pm-5pm for eight consecutive weeks beginning on March 31, 2008. It's not too late to join. Call the station at 781-395-5993 to sign up.
